Ivanhoe Liberia

Increasing demands for critical minerals and green steel has placed the mining industry central to the energy transition, providing the raw materials critical to innovation, development and our future.

Robert Friedland has an established pattern of world-class asset development and value creation in the mining industry, with projects spanning North America, Africa and Asia Since 2019, Ivanhoe Atlantic has had a 25-year Mining Convention with the Government of Guinea, prescribing the terms of operatorship, export and licence to mine.

Ivanhoe Atlantic also benefits from a 2021 ratified bilateral Implementation Agreement between the governments of Liberia and Guinea to evacuate iron ore mined in Guinea through Liberia.

Ivanhoe Atlantic is supporting the creation of a new multi-user infrastructure corridor – the Liberty Corridor to connect Guinea and Liberia. Discussions with US Government funding institutions and global development finance institutions (DFIs) are well advanced. Ivanhoe Atlantic also owns the St. John River Properties iron ore exploration licences in Liberia. This asset, once owned by BHP has a reserve potential of 600 million tonnes, covering a combined area of almost 250km2.

Operations

Sustainability

Ivanhoe Atlantic develops sustainable long-lasting mining projects which are well-integrated into the economic, environmental, and social fabric of the region.

Mindful of the balance between human activity and the environment, commitment to responsible mining is at the core of Ivanhoe Atlantic. Mining is a vital industry, but equally vital is understanding and implementing the very best practices in all that we do. From the initial groundwork through the mine life, our team are deeply experienced in maintaining the highest standards. Our values reflect today’s world, where responsibility, contribution and collaborative efforts do effect positive change.

Environment

SMFG complies strictly with Guinean legal requirements for strict nature reserves, as well as with all relevant Guinean environmental legislation concerning protection of fauna and flora, environmental and social impact assessment, and related topics.

Collaborating with communities, governments and NGOs, our intent is to maintain the environmental integrity of areas which surround our projects. Through extensive research, discussion and collaboration, our projects develop with a clear understanding of our environmental responsibilities. Adhering to all relevant regulation is merely the starting point, from where we proceed to deliver an environmental best in-class-approach to modern-day mining.

Our Kon Kweni Project is located on the extreme south-east of the Republic of Guinea, on the border with Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire. The Kon Kweni mining concession spans just 6.25 km² and is situated adjacent to a Strict Nature Reserve, which covers over 200 km² in the Guinean and Ivorian Nimba Mountain range.

The project team, under SMFG has worked extensively with the management agencies for the Mount Nimba WHS to increase its protections, and actively supported local development to draw subsistence pressures away from the area. With in-depth environmental reports commissioned per project, Ivanhoe Atlantic believes this research can open pathways to greater environmental conservation.

Social Responsibility

At the core of Ivanhoe Atlantic is the goal of equitable sustainable development. Achieving this goal requires considerable work with the communities within which we operate. As a significant project, Kon Kweni will be a catalyst for growth, economic development and jobs, and create positive legacies for future generations.

Addressing the needs and expectations of the surrounding community, Ivanhoe Atlantic’s Community Relations team engages directly with our closest stakeholders. Community Relations (At what stage is this study?) Ivanhoe Atlantic commissioned a study to assess opportunities and constraints associated with unlocking economic opportunities beyond mining in Lola Prefecture and surrounding areas. The study is looking comprehensively at land uses, agriculture, animal husbandry, transport, power, markets and trade, banking, support industries for industry, and more.

Local Content

To ensure a broad economic impact, Ivanhoe Atlantic seeks to use “local content” in procurement, contracting and employment opportunities wherever possible. We support advancement of village-level land use planning, regional development planning and commercial agriculture which benefits small-scale farmers. Wherever possible, Ivanhoe Atlantic will support design and investment in agribusiness opportunities in Lola Prefecture to promote viable regional development.
